Welcome to the magical world of parenthood! As a newborn photographer based in Evans, Georgia, I understand the desire to capture every fleeting moment with your precious bundle of joy. While a professional photoshoot is always a fantastic option, I'm here to guide you on how to create beautiful DIY newborn photos right in the comfort of your home. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can transform your living space into a cozy haven for capturing those unforgettable early moments.

Setting the Right Temperature: Cozy and Comfortable

Newborns are sensitive to temperature changes, so it's crucial to keep the room warm and comfortable during the photoshoot. Set the thermostat to a toasty 75-80°F (24-27°C) or bring a space heater into the room and close the door. Ensure your baby is comfortably dressed and use soft blankets to keep them warm between poses. A comfortable and relaxed baby is more likely to cooperate during the shoot.

As you can see in the following image you also want to make sure that baby is comfortable. Here I have baby resting on a pillow and I also have posing beans (you can use rolled up receiving blankets/burp clothes) to cradle around babies legs and bottom.

Plain Blanket Magic: A Simple Background for Elegance

Choose a plain, neutral-colored blanket as the backdrop for your DIY photoshoot. Solid colors or subtle patterns work best, allowing the focus to remain on your adorable little one. Lay the blanket over a soft surface, like a bed or a plush rug, to create a cozy and visually appealing setting.

Curating the Nursery: A Personal Touch

Capture the essence of your newborn's nursery by incorporating elements of the room into your photos. Use handmade blankets or baby's crib to add a personal touch. This not only creates a more meaningful backdrop but also helps tell the story of your baby's early days in their special space.

Harness the Power of Window Lighting: Natural Beauty Unleashed

When it comes to lighting, natural light is your best friend. Position your baby near a large window where soft, diffused light can illuminate their features naturally. Avoid harsh sunlight to prevent squinting and harsh shadows. Soft, indirect window lighting creates a gentle and flattering atmosphere for your DIY newborn photography session.

As you can see in the following image, baby is placed on a bed close to the window. The window is north facing (no direct light) and I put a sheer curtain up to filter the light to give soft light.

ALWAYS have the light coming down baby's face (top of head pointing to direction of light).

Capturing the precious moments of your newborn's early days doesn't always require a professional photographer. With these DIY tips, you can create a warm and loving environment right at home for stunning, heartfelt photographs. Remember to take your time, be patient, and enjoy the process of immortalizing these fleeting moments. If you decide that you'd like a professional touch, I'm always here to help at Hope Believe Photography in Evans, Georgia. Happy photographing!
